Mission: The University of California 4-H Youth Development Program engages youth in reaching their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development.
All the non-profits we collaborate with have a vision for their community—what’s your vision?
We envision a world in which youth and adults learn, grow, and work together as catalysts for positive change. Our hands-on projects fall under four primary areas. We provide meaningful opportunities for youth and adults to work together to create sustainable community change. These areas are:
- Civic Engagement
- Leadership
- Healthy Living
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
Describe your organization and/or the work you do in three words.
Positive Youth Development
What specific work have you been using donations to accomplish recently?
We have been using donations to bring more youth to the State Leadership Conference and other events around California. All donations to the State Leadership Conference help defer the cost for 4-H members to attend these events. From registration to transportation, these events can cost close to $800 per member. With 300 members attending, approximately $240,000 is needed to completely cover the cost of attendance.
Do you have an individual success story to share from your organization’s efforts?
One of our 4-H’ers received the Congressional Award Gold Medal with STEM distinction. Read more about it here: https://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=31010
Educating the public about causes is an important part of non-profit work. Is there something you’d like everyone to know about the people you help or the efforts of your team?
The University of California 4-H Youth Development Program fulfills its mission of “engaging youth in reaching their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development” through a wide variety of research-based “hands-on” learning activities. These activities develop a young person’s knowledge and experience in the areas of citizenship, leadership, and life skills. Each year, approximately 140,000 youth, ages 5 – 19, and over 20,000 volunteers participate in the California 4-H Youth Development Program.
What should people know if they want to volunteer with California 4-H?
California 4-H has over 20,000 support volunteers with ties to every county in the state. These volunteers are an integral part of a vast network of staff, advisors, and specialists who extend research-based information into the community, and develop and deliver programs at the county, area, state, and national level.
